Politically/socially he’s not sexist, supports female equality, but on a personal level he’s incredibly bitter about women.

He was taken to the cleaners in a bitter divorce, denied access to his children, lost his house, car, and many of his prized possessions. He came within a hair of being jailed when he couldn’t produce proof that he had paid part of the settlement, because he had given it to his ex in cash and had no receipt, and she lied and told the court he hadn’t paid.

Then, after a bad industrial accident, his new girl friend left him, saying something mean about how the plastic surgery hadn’t fixed his face properly and she couldn’t bear to look at him, and how a crippled man has no value.

In a discussion of old ailments, I told him that my lady had survived a bout with breast cancer some years ago, and that the only sign of it was a scar on the underside of one breast.

He said something about how her only value, as a body, was ruined, and why did I bother to stay with a valueless piece of property.

I was astonished. I knew he was bitter about women, but THAT is just incredibly nasty. That was about a month ago. I haven’t approached him since and I’m not sure I want to spend time with him even if he WAS to apologize, which he didn’t.

I ran in to him on the street in my small town yesterday, and just nodded hello, didn’t stop or talk.

He does have SOME redeeming characteristics — I’ve seen him stand up for underdogs (yes, weirdly enough, sometimes for women), he’s very intelligent, and usually witty and funny despite being an incredibly unhappy person. When we used to socialize, he even met, and charmed, my lady.

What do I do? Forgive? Demand an apology, then forgive? Just forget him?

I’m at a loss here.
